Objectives

The concept for the steel fin, structural glass entry wall at the San Francisco Public Safety Building was created by HOK Architects and Arup.  Bellwether was brought on to the project to design, engineer and supply the complete system, including integrated structural glass skylights with blast and ballistic ratings.

Approach

Bellwether designed the 32′ tall structural glass entry wall with custom, 1-1/2″ thick steel fins.  Glass deadload is supported by integrated gravity brackets, with no exterior fasteners, to provide a monolithic appearance.  Door portals, canopies, and structural glass skylights were integrated into the design.

Results

The resulting design at the public safety building provides a clean, uncluttered appearance, with the added safety of a ballistic and blast rating.  Multiple skylights bring light into entries, and through monumental art glass installations.
